Reflections on 2024:

Life as an Autism and ADHD Coach

As we close out 2024, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve had as an autism and ADHD coach. This year has been filled with profound experiences, challenges, and insights that have not only shaped my practice but have also deepened my understanding of the neurodivergent community I serve.

The Heart of Coaching

At the core of my work as a coach is a deep commitment to empowerment. Every individual I work with brings a unique story, a distinct set of strengths, and specific challenges. In 2024, I’ve seen firsthand how tailored strategies can transform lives. Whether it’s helping a young adult navigate college, assisting a child with social skills, or guiding a parent in understanding their child’s needs, the impact of my coaching is profound.

Celebrating Progress

This year, I was privileged to witness numerous breakthroughs. One client, a teenager with ADHD, struggled with organisation and focus. Together, we developed a system that incorporated visual aids and time management techniques. By the end of the year, not only had they passed all exams but they also gained confidence in their abilities. They are now applying to university for an exciting new chapter in their life.

Another example is a male client in his 40’s who has experienced more trauma in his life than anyone could imagine. His passion for advocating for not only himself but for those around him who are neurodivergent blows me away. The progress he had made is astounding and he is gaining the confidence to kick start his creative side again. Sadly he faced a loss over Xmas but he has continued to make me proud by ensuring he is using his self care that we have been working on and getting himself out and about to help him cope with his emotions.

Moments like these remind me why I chose this path—they are a testament to resilience and the power of collaboration.

The Importance of Community

In 2024, community has played a pivotal role in my coaching practice. I’ve forged connections with other professionals, parents, and advocacy groups dedicated to supporting individuals with autism and ADHD. These collaborations have enriched my understanding and provided additional resources for my clients. Attending conferences and workshops this year has allowed me to share insights, learn from others, and foster a sense of belonging within the neurodiverse community.

Challenges and Growth

While the year has been marked by successes, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Navigating the complexities of neurodivergent needs requires continuous learning and adaptation. I encountered clients with varying levels of support needs, and I have had to adjust my coaching styles accordingly. This process has reinforced the importance of patience, empathy, and active listening in my practice.

I also faced the challenge of self-care. As a coach, it’s easy to become immersed in the lives of my clients and forget to take care of my own mental and emotional well-being. Although this is not something I have managed to achieve I have made a promise to myself to make the effort to prioritise my own mental health and self-care. By taking care of myself, I can better serve my clients.

Advocacy and Awareness

One of my highlights of the year was presenting to a large group of professionals and parents my own PowerPoint presentation on AuDHd and time blindness. Not only has this raised more awareness to others but opened up new connections and exciting projects for the New Year.

Looking Ahead

As I look to the future, I feel a renewed sense of purpose. My goals for 2025 include expanding my coaching practice, developing workshops for parents and educators, and continuing to advocate for neurodivergent individuals. I’m excited to explore new tools and techniques that can further empower my clients and enhance their lives

Being an autism and ADHD coach in 2024 has been a transformative experience. The privilege of supporting individuals in their journeys, witnessing their growth, and being part of a vibrant community is something I cherish deeply. I look forward to another year of learning, growth, and connection as we continue to navigate the beautiful complexities of neurodiversity together.
